PRAISE THE LORD FOR
SOME WONDERFUL RESOLUTIONS!
There is nothing magic about January 1st. However, the first part of a new year is a good time for reviewing the previous year, planning the new one, and making some changes in your life. It gives you an opportunity to make a fresh start.
Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions? To “resolve” means to make a firm decision. For instance, we sing the old hymn “I am resolved to follow the Saviour…”, meaning that I have made a firm decision to follow the Lord.
Recently I ran across the following ten resolutions from an unknown author. I believe these resolutions would make 2008, and every future year, successful for anyone who would determine to follow them. These resolutions are a series of choices that we can make, and, of course, the
choices we make ultimately determine the direction our lives take.
· Choose to love rather than hate—This is the message of the Gospel; that God loves us and we are to love one another. In the Sermon on the Mount, Christ taught us to love even those who wish to do us harm. Our Christian maturity will grow by “leaps and bounds” when we let go of hate and resolve to love everyone.
· Choose to smile rather than frown—This is a “win-win” for everybody concerned. We feel better when we smile, and we make others feel better also.. We can lighten our load, and theirs, by catching someone’s eye and smiling. For an instant, the world is brighter, and is not as lonely and cold.
· Choose to build rather than destroy—One of the great things about peacetime is that we can build. War is all about destruction; sometimes necessary, but never happy.
· Choose to persevere rather than quit—Perseverance is a necessary ingredient to success. Good things happen to those who “hang in there”.
· Choose to praise rather than gossip—People tend to live up, or down, to our expectations. Encouraging words are great motivators. On the other hand, gossip takes a malicious delight in the difficulties of other people.
· Choose to heal rather than to wound—Expressions of faith, hope, and love tend to heal minds, hearts, and spirits. And tends to heal bodies as well! Conversely, our words and attitudes also have the power to injure, wound, and destroy.
· Choose to give rather than grasp—Grasping is a terrible way to live! And it is counter-productive. Whether we “grasp” for people, things, or
· happiness, they all seem to flee away from us. But when we give, it all comes back to us multiplied. The “law of sowing and reaping” is very real!
· Choose to act rather than delay—Good ideas, plans, and intentions go to waste unless we put them into action. Why don’t we? Fear, uncertainty, lack of focus, and vague priorities tend to paralyze us. We should list what is important to us, find a simple “entry point” into complicated tasks, and get started. The law of inertia says that it is easier to keep something moving than it is to start it moving.
· Choose to forgive rather than curse—Unforgiveness is like acid that eats the container in which it is stored. We can only put a bad situation behind us when we can let it go! And we can only let go by forgiving. By the way, to give forgiveness means “to give up resentment.” It does not mean giving trust again. Trust is earned, not given.
· Choose to pray rather than despair—This is the one that really caught my attention! An old hymn says, “Just keep on praying ‘til light breaks through…The Lord will answer, He’ll answer you…God keeps His promise…His Word is true…Just keep on praying ‘til light breaks through.” Nothing is beyond the power of prayer except what is beyond the will of God. To choose to despair is to choose to give up hope. There is never a time for a Christian to give up hope. Not as long as we can pray!
Praise The Lord for “Some Wonderful Resolutions”.
